LOWELL, Mich – King Milling Company has been turning wheat into flour for more than 100 years. The company, at 115 S. Broadway St. on the banks of the Flat River, is one of just a few commercial mills in the country that still uses water as a power source.
But that doesn’t mean the company doesn’t embrace the latest technologies. For example, they use the latest electronic color sorters to ensure bakers and cereal manufacturers receive the highest quality whole wheat products.
And now, the oldest continually operating flour mill in Michigan has a website that serves as both a virtual historical walk down Main Street and as evidence of the forward thinking that has kept the company at the forefront of the industry since 1890.
“We think it’s a big improvement over what we had,” said Jim Doyle, King Milling senior vice president. “It’s a nice combination of the historical significance of the company and the progressiveness of the company.”
The new site -- www.Kingflour.com -- includes:
- General information about the company and its King Flour product line
- A company history, including an online gallery of photos that go back nearly 100 years
- Real-time news feeds from Grainnet.com, an online news service of Grain Journal, Milling Journal, BioFuels Journal and Seed Today magazines
- Industry news and links
- Job postings
The new site also utilizes the DotNetNuke content management system, which allows King Milling staff to manage the entire site, including pages, content, security and to track site traffic in real-time.
i2Integration, a Lansing-based web development company with a satellite office in downtown Lowell, created the new website. i2Integration developed the graphics and coding, and hosts the website from its main network operations center in Lansing.
i2Integration CEO John Forsberg is a Lowell-are resident and a member with Doyle of the Fallasburg Historical Society.
“We’re thrilled that we had the opportunity to develop King Milling’s website and showcase our expertise for one of Lowell’s flagship businesses,” Forsberg said. “And in the internet business, where our clients are scattered across the country, it feels good to have a hand in the success of a business in our own neighborhood.”
i2Integration was started in 1994 as a division of Forsberg Group, Inc. and is a premier provider of web and IT solutions. Services include custom web development, IT support and multimedia production for clients in the healthcare, corporate, non-profit, government and business-to-business sectors.
